(1) The Government doesn’t pay ANYONE the minimum wage so it has no impact on current public spending
(2) There is no security of tenure @ the minimum wage as it is of a “casual” nature (as correctly highlighted by Michael Noonan). This idea that “existing contracts will not be affected” is just a joke – I imagine that mercenary employers are likely to terminate and then re-hire at the lower rate; there tends to be no labour representation at this level either
(3) Cutting the job-seekers rate AND cutting the minimum wage will not incentivise people to move from one to the other – why not keep the minimum wage at it is and get some people back into the labour force?
I see no sense or logic at either the micro or macro level to this.
